Possible risks to be aware of
- Localised swelling at the point of piercing
- Bleeding
- Bruising
- Infection - though avoidable by following the aftercare guidelines
It is important you never play with the piercing, most importantly due to transfer of infection. The piercing can be moved through constant "fiddling" The piercing holes can be stretched You can pull scar tissue out as mentioned below You can even cause the skin to multiply, resulting in migration, where the skin peels until the jewellery is completely expelled from the body
- Reddened, shiny skin, appearance similar to a burn- this caused by OVER USE of the cleansing solution.
Once a day for wiping the skin is sufficient, unless infected, then seek medical advice.
- Jewellery embedding - we allow 2mm extra on all jewellery than required to allow for any swelling until fully healed, therefore avoiding the chances of embedding, if jewellery is being “pulled in” return to your piercer without delay for a larger jewellery change
- Lumps-DO NOT turn your jewellery , the lumps coming out of a piercing are due to turning the jewellery, and causing a break down of the fistula, which is the name given to the formation of scar tissue which forms the tunnel through which the jewellery runs, it will eventually dry out and peel off, but LEAVE IT ALONE!
It is also caused by removing jewellery too soon, just because it looks healed is not a true indication of it being healed inside, and it may have been holding the jewellery and was pulled out.
- Allergic reactions - though rare as the jewellery we use is Titanium, which conforms to the EU directive on initial piercings with a trace Nickel content which makes it suitable for use in medical transplants, PTFE is available at no extra cost if you are particularly sensitive, even to Titanium.
- Fainting – avoidable by eating shortly before having a piercing
If despite information provided here, or after visiting us, you are still unsure or unhappy we would suggest you seek medical advice, we are trained in all aspects of piercings, but we ARE NOT Doctors.
Prior to undergoing a piercing we suggest you follow these tips
We recommend you avoid alcohol 24 hours before and after a piercing, the client would NOT BE PIERCED if under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Eat an hour prior to having a piercing, this prevents the chance of feeling faint.
Only have the piercing if it`s what YOU want don’t be pressurised in to it!
Ensure the area to be pierced is clean.
Before having your piercing you will be asked to complete a consent form there is a list of medical conditions displayed in the studio, this does require reading carefully, we will not continue until we are satisfied that they are not applicable to you. It does not necessarily mean we will refuse you a piercing if a condition applies to you but telling us may enable us to meet any special needs and prevent any potentially serious complications, or you satisfy yourself by contacting your GP first.
It is worth noting that you will be unable to donate blood for 12 months following a piercing.
ILLNESS AFFECTS YOUR BODYS ABILITY TO IF YOU FEEL UNWELL DON`T GET PIERCED!
The conditions that we require you to inform us are listed alphabetically.
- Allergic Reactions.
-
Nickel- we use Titanium which conforms to an EU Directive on initial piercings, therefore you should be fine, however, if you are VERY sensitive we can use PTFE, which is a form of Acrylic, therefore NO metal content.
I am constantly asked can I use 9CT Gold as that`s all they can wear, the answer is no....9CT Gold has too much Nickel to conform to intial piercings, as you go up in grade of gold, it becomes too porous to be hygienic in initial piercings, however these days, High Tech Gold Titanium is available for all piercings, it looks exactly like quality gold but it is approx 30% dearer, we do hold it in stock. Adhesive plaster sensitivity- this is only revelant where a plaster may be used ie Navel, Nipple, oblongata, and will obvously not be used

Anxiety of piercing can bring on an attack- bring inhaler in case.

Fainting
- Eat prior to piercing to keep sugar levels up to prevent the likely hood of fainting, don`t attempt to get up too quickly after, remove outer garments to prevent getting too hot. Bring someone with you in case you faint after leaving the studio
However in our experience it is the accompanying person who faints rather than the person having the piercing themselves!!!!!
